What is a TBI?
A TBI is a disruption in normal brain function caused by a sudden impact, blow, or jolt to the head. TBIs can range from mild (such as concussions, which may cause temporary confusion or headaches) to severe (resulting in long-term cognitive, physical, and behavioral impairments).
The effects of a TBI vary widely depending on the severity and location of the injury. Cognitively, survivors may experience memory loss, difficulty concentrating, impaired judgment, or challenges with communication.
Physically, TBIs can cause mobility issues, muscle weakness, fatigue, and problems with coordination or balance. Some individuals may also experience mood swings, personality changes, or difficulty regulating emotions.
A TBI can significantly change a survivor’s needs, requiring adjustments in daily living, work, and social interactions. Families often take on caregiving roles, navigating new responsibilities such as managing medical care, therapy appointments, and emotional support.
These changes can be overwhelming, but with the right resources, education, and support, survivors and their families can adapt and work toward greater independence and quality of life.

CRS-IL TBI Services provides the following five core services. All services are provided directly or by arrangement in a coordinated service model.
Our TBI program offers the following core areas of support delivered either directly or through coordinated partnerships to ensure comprehensive assistance:
Community Navigation and Reintegration
Our organization provides advocacy and personalized resources to help TBI survivors develop, maintain, and maximize independent functioning, with the goal of living and participating fully in the community. We assist with accessing housing and transportation resources, medical and rehabilitative care, chemical dependency recovery programs, education, and other essential services. Through tailored guidance and training, we empower survivors to navigate their recovery, regain independence, and improve their overall quality of life.
Enhanced Information & Referral
We provide TBI survivors and their support teams with comprehensive information and referrals to help them identify, access, and coordinate essential services. This empowers them to grow and thrive on their path to independence.
Outreach Coordination
Our TBI department focuses on early outreach to connect individuals with brain injuries to essential support, with the goal of improving their overall system of care. We collaborate with hospitals and community organizations, provide direct assistance, and help survivors navigate medical, financial, and independent living resources. Our efforts include peer support, care coordination, and education to ensure individuals and their families receive the guidance they need for recovery and independence.
Supported Living
We offer individuals with TBI personalized support to encourage and promote their right to self-determination, and assist in achieving their independence. Services may include guidance to navigate benefits and resources, coordinating medical and rehabilitation services, providing peer support and advocacy, and offering skill-building programs for mobility, communication, and self-care. Through these efforts, we empower individuals to lead more confident and self-sufficient lives. Vocational Support We provide comprehensive support in finding and securing employment that aligns with your skills, strengths, and career goals. These services may include aptitude and personality assessments, job training assistance, and connections to employment agencies and programs to help you build a sustainable and fulfilling career.
